Retronychia: A retrospective study of 25 cases

2021, Dermatologic ClinicsCitation Excerpt :When the nail plate starts to grow backward “retro,” it pushes into the proximal nail fold and leads to chronic paronychia, pain, and drainage. This usually occurs in the setting of chronic, ongoing trauma, particularly in the setting of sports, dance, or wearing either tight shoes or those that exert excess pressure on the toes, such as occurs with high-heeled shoes.32 More common in young female patients, this finding also has been observed in much younger pediatric patients who have abnormal gait (such as toe walking) due to neurologic problems (personal anecdote).

2018, Anais Brasileiros de DermatologiaCitation Excerpt :The condition emerged as a distinct entity in 2008 when De Berker et al. presented a series of 19 cases in meetings of the European Nail Society (ENS).2 Less than 100 cases of retronychia have been reported in the literature.1-16 Trauma or systemic illness are the most common precipitating events, causing disruption of longitudinal nail bed growth and vertical growth of the new plate into the proximal nail fold.
