2018, Canadian Journal of CardiologyCitation Excerpt :First, information on current medication was not available for most patients in our study and could therefore not be analyzed. Second, similar to previous reports on this topic,3,5,21-23,34 we did not confirm whether or not patients admitted for STEMI were viewers of a hockey match. Thus, although our findings suggest an association between sporting events and cardiovascular risk, future studies will have to establish a causative relationship between exposure to emotional stress during major sporting events and increases in cardiovascular risk.

2013, International Journal of CardiologyCitation Excerpt :A literature search revealed 12 related studies of which all included fewer diagnoses. While we assessed all major cardiac diseases and disorders relevant for the clinical manifestation of a cardiac event (myocardial infarction and myocardial re-infarction both including STEMI and NSTEMI, cardiac arrest, paroxysmal tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and all remaining tachyarrhythmias including ventricular tachycardia), one study analyzed 4 kinds of cardiac events [15], whereas all others assessed three or fewer diseases of which not all were related to cardiac events [11–14,16–22]. Emotional stress induced by watching sporting events has been associated with cardiac events.
