In men, ageing is accompanied by decreases in total testosterone (TT), free testosterone (FT), dihydrotestosterone (DHT), estradiol (E2), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), whereas luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels gradually increase over time [8, 33, 51]. Both androgen [38, 65, 66] and estrogen [15, 27, 64, 66] receptors are expressed throughout the brain, with a particular abundance in the hippocampus [2, 5, 30, 58].
