Superior mesenteric artery thrombosis in a child with chronic abdominal pain
2021, Journal of Pediatric Surgery Case ReportsCitation Excerpt :This was associated with a perforated appendix and intra-abdominal sepsis. Fibromuscular dysplasia appears to be a cause of the thrombosis in children who presented at aged 4 and 5 years including one fatal case [5,6]. A more recent case in a 3 year old child had acute multi-visceral thrombosis and ischemia including an SMA thrombosis [7].
Single vessel abdominal arterial disease
2009, Best Practice and Research: Clinical GastroenterologyCitation Excerpt :It affects the renal and cerebral arteries most commonly, followed in sequence by the mesenteric, subclavian, iliac, carotid and coronary arteries [27]. The occurrence of single vessel abdominal artery fibro-muscular dysplasia has been described in several patients with familial fibro-muscular dysplasia [28,29]. Multivessel disease seems to occur in approximately 26% of patients [30].
Fibromuscular dysplasia in association with intrauterine cocaine exposure
2007, Cardiovascular PathologyCitation Excerpt :The pathologic findings in this case showed fibromuscular dysplasia of the intimal type in multiple vascular beds resulting in multiple organ-related symptoms. It is reasonable to postulate that the initial clinical presentation could have been the result of ischemic visceral injury related to fibromuscular dysplasia because FMD is known to have severe visceral manifestations ranging from chronic weight loss to acute intestinal ischemia [1,9,10]. Whatever caused his vomiting, the resulting hypovolemia stressed a system that was unable to handle additional stressors because of his underlying vascular disease.
