Effects and safety of perfluorohexyloctane on the eye surface and corneal endothelium
2020, Archivos de la Sociedad Espanola de OftalmologiaChorioretinal Toxicity of Perfluorooctane (Ala Octa): Results From 48 Surgical Procedures in Geneva
2020, American Journal of OphthalmologyCitation Excerpt :However, toxicity has been observed when PFCLs have been used as a medium-term (between 1 and 3 weeks) or long-term (more than 3 weeks) tamponade, regardless of the type of PCFL,13–17 resulting in retinal detachments by giant tear,18,19 with or without vitreoretinal proliferation,20 cataract and dispersion of the PCFLs in micro-droplets.13,14 Animal data have shown retinal toxicity, mainly for the inferior retina, with hypertrophy of Muller cells from day 6 of tamponade, alteration of photoreceptor outer segments from week 2, presence of macrophages in the inner plexiform layer as well as intraretinal perfluorocarbon and retinal atrophy from week 4, vacuolization, and axonal loss of the optical fibers from week 4.13,21,22 Zeana and associates23 reported good tolerance for PFCLs by the cornea and the lens, with only moderate alteration shown on an electroretinogram at 14 weeks.
