Consensus Statement: Role of Therapy With “Statins” in Patients With Hypertriglyceridemia
Section snippets
Conclusions
There is strong evidence that hypertriglyceridemia is associated with increased risk for coronary artery disease. This increased risk appears to be related to 2 factors: the presence of higher levels of atherogenic triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and the association of elevated serum triglycerides with other risk factors of the metabolic syndrome (the lipid triad, hypertension, insulin resistance, and a procoagulant state). One approach to risk reduction in hypertriglyceridemic patients is to

2020, Biochemistry and Biophysics ReportsCitation Excerpt :Cholesterol-lowering statin therapy significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease [5,6]. Studies in patients with hypertriglyceridemia have shown that statins can also inhibit triglyceride synthesis [7]. Statins are associated with a decrease in the concentration of the entire set of free fatty acid (FFA) in plasma [8].

Statins show partial agonism of peroxisome proliferator activating receptor PPARα and PPARγ [228]. Pleiotropic effects of statin include improvement in endothelial function and anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic and anti-proliferative effects, decrease in sCD40L [213,229].

Patients with very high triglyceride concentrations (500 mg/dL or greater) are susceptible to develop acute pancreatitis [30,31]. Therefore, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological measures should be considered in patients with high triglyceride concentrations [30–32].
