2020, Operative Techniques in Thoracic and Cardiovascular SurgeryCitation Excerpt :It was in the late 80s of the 20th century, when the implementation of videoscopic-assisted surgery opened up new prospects for any kind of minimal invasive chest surgery. Toni Lerut (1993) adopted this concept aiming at a transformation of the bumpy “tunnel view” of cervical mediastinoscopy into an unblemished “cinematographic view” of (what is now called) video-assisted mediastinoscopy (VAM).3 The quantum leap of the imaging system led to enhanced visibility, facilitating the performance and teaching of the procedure as well as the stowing of visual information.
