    People with congenital Gerbode type defects are at higher risk for development of infective endocarditis.7,8 Acquired forms have also been reported from ventricular septal perforation secondary to bacterial endocarditis, trauma, valve replacement surgery, and myocardial infarction.4,6,9–15 A Gerbode type defect has been reported only once in a dog in a case of an LVOT–RA shunt in a Great Pyrenees associated with aortic valve endocarditis; diagnosis was made on postmortem examination.16
