Zusammenfassung
Übergewicht, Diabetes mellitus und Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen zählen zu den häufigsten Gesundheitsproblemen in unserer Gesellschaft. Immer deutlicher wird, dass die Disposition für eine solche Krankheit nicht ausschließlich von den Genen und Lebensbedingungen bestimmt wird. Beobachtungsstudien haben gezeigt, dass die Ernährung während der Schwangerschaft und im frühen Kindesalter langfristige Auswirkungen auf Wachstum und Gesundheit hat. Allerdings sind die genauen Wirkmechanismen der sog. metabolischen Prägung bisher nicht eindeutig bekannt. Diese sollen im Rahmen des EARNEST-Projekts („EARly Nutrition programming – long-term follow-up of Efficacy and Safety Trials and integrated epidemiological, genetic, animal, consumer and economic research“) aufgeklärt werden. Basierend auf diesem Wissen ergeben sich neue Möglichkeiten, die Ernährung des Fetus und Kleinkinds zu verbessern, damit die Entstehung häufiger Krankheiten im Erwachsenenalter wirksam reduziert wird.
Abstract
Overweight, diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases are amongst the most common health problems in our society. It is becoming more apparent that the predisposition for such diseases is not only genetically and lifestyle based. Observational studies have shown that nutrition during pregnancy and in early childhood has a long-term effect on growth and health. Admittedly, the exact functioning of this so called metabolic programming is not accurately known. This will be determined within the framework of the EARNEST project (EARly Nutrition programming – long-term follow-up of Efficacy and Safety Trials and integrated epidemiological, genetic, animal, consumer and economic research). Based on this knowledge, new possibilities for improving the nutrition of the fetus and small children will become available in order to effectively reduce the development of these common diseases of adulthood.
