Abstract

Obesity is a multifactorial disease with a pathogenesis including genetic factors, overeating, physical inactivity and a variety of other factors. Numerous recently published studies have contributed to a better understanding of relevant pathogenic mechanisms and the association with accompanying diseases as well as therapeutic strategies. According to current guidelines, dietary, physical and behavioral therapy are the basis for the treatment of obesity. There is, however, an ongoing debate about the different strategies which are actually used in the clinical setting. While the relevance of pharmacotherapy for obesity has recently appeared to decline, the opposite can be observed for bariatric surgery. Recently published studies with favorable data support the use of surgical strategies in obese subjects when indicated, as also suggested in current international guidelines.
