War Lucia schizophren? – Zur Psychopathologie des Wahnsinns in der Oper

Summary

Mad scenes, in the age of belcanto, were a stylistic device to give primadonnas the opportunity to show off their coloratura abilities. The composers used this artificial and virtuosic style of singing to express exceptional emotional states. In Lucia di Lammermoor Donizetti composed some fine and exemplary music which impressively stresses that the tragic actress suffers from „Brief psychotic disorder“. However, as death is not part of the diagnostic criteria, one can assume that Lucia finally dies from „broken heart“ nowadays known as „Takatsubo cardiomyopathy“.
