Summary

In this review, the research on suicidal behavior among children and adolescents in Austria to date will be summarized. Although the first documented conference on youth suicides took place almost 100 years ago, in 1910, in Vienna, reports on suicidal behavior in children and adolescents in Austria remain scarce. In 1980s, the first autopsy report on youth suicides in Vienna was published. Subsequently, first epidemiological trends on adolescent suicides in Austria were reported. Recently, several studies were conducted which reported on the prevalence of suicide among children and adolescents, suicide trends and suicide methods used, youth risk factors for suicide and attitudes towards suicide, as well as suicidality in youth delinquents. The implications of this data for youth suicide prevention in Austria as well as future research are discussed.
