Diagnosis and management of rheumatoid cervical spine involvement
2017, Revue du Rhumatisme MonographiesThe Effects of Clinical Factors and Retro-Odontoid Soft Tissue Thickness on Atlantoaxial Instability in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis
2017, World NeurosurgeryCitation Excerpt :The official name of the Steinbrocker staging is “Classification of progression of rheumatoid arthritis,” and the categorization of arthritis is made on the basis of joint radiographs and clinical manifestations.27 This staging system suggests that an increase in the severity of RA leads to joint destruction and a worsening of clinical symptoms.28,29 In other words, an increase in Steinbrocker stage indicates worsening patient status due to peripheral joint destruction, which also is inversely proportional to ROST thickness.
Comparison of Transarticular Screw Fixation and C1 Lateral Mass-C2 Pedicle Screw Fixation in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis with Atlantoaxial Instability
2017, World NeurosurgeryCitation Excerpt :None of the C1LM-C2P patients showed neurologic deficits, pain aggravation relative to before surgery, or migration of the interlaminar spacer during surveillance. RA is a chronic systemic autoimmune disorder of unknown cause that is characterized by symmetric synovial inflammation and tenderness in multiple joints, particularly the minor joints of the upper and lower extremities.2,10,21,23,24 RA affects an estimated 1%–2% of the adult population worldwide.
Rheumatoid arthritis vs osteoarthritis in patients receiving total knee arthroplasty: Perioperative outcomes
2014, Journal of ArthroplastyCitation Excerpt :It is tempting to speculate that current therapeutic norms for RA while decreasing the prevalence of cardiac disease have enriched the population of RA arthroplasty cases with the less treatment responsive smokers who are more likely to have underlying pulmonary disease. Moreover, general anesthesia requiring tracheal intubation can pose significant difficulties and risks in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis-related cervical spine instability [33,34]. Surprisingly, three adverse events occurred more frequently in the OA group in terms of crude incidence: non-myocardial infarction cardiac adverse events, acute renal failure and gastrointestinal adverse events.
