Complementary treatment approaches for patients with gastritis and functional dyspepsia during anticancer treatment

  • Integrative Onkologie

Der Onkologe Aims and scope

Zusammenfassung

Hintergrund

Abstract

Background

Many patients with malignancies of the upper gastrointestinal tract suffer from gastritis or functional dyspepsia during their multimodal treatment. Both symptoms have an important impact on the nutritional status of these patients.

Methods

The current study represents a compilation of several complementary alternative medicine (CAM) approaches that have been tested in clinical studies. Additionally, we listed known phytopharmaceutical remedies of traditional European medicine (TEM).

Results

There are several drug-based and non-drug-based therapeutic approaches for gastritis or functional dyspepsia, which an oncologist should know and consider for treatment. So far there are only very few clinical studies investigating traditional European phytopharmaceutical drugs. The patient can contribute to the alleviation of symptoms by following a light balanced diet and avoiding alcohol, coffee, citrus fruits, and incompatible foods.

Conclusion

In individual cases, CAM may be reasonable for improving symptoms of gastritis and functional dyspepsia. More in-depth investigations of the effects of traditional European medicinal herbs are required, as our patients show a high consumer acceptance for these remedies.
