Zahlreiche Studien zeigen eine Korrelation zwischen niedrigen Vitamin-D-Werten und diversen Krankheiten. Diese Assoziation konnte in einer großen epidemiologischen Untersuchung aus den USA auch für die diabetische Neuropathie und einen Vitamin-D-Mangel nachgewiesen werden. Die Autoren empfahlen Interventionsstudien, um Neuropathie-Symptome mit einer Vitamin-D-Supplementation zu lindern. Obwohl verschiedene Arbeiten tatsächlich bei supplementierten Patienten positive Effekte anhand von Neuropathie-Scores belegen konnten, hilft uns das aus der Sicht der evidenzbasierten Medizin nicht weiter. Die Studien waren nicht placebokontrolliert oder berichteten über statistische Signifikanz ohne sichere klinische Relevanz – und in allen Fällen war die gewählte Vitamin-D-Dosis deutlich höher als die Empfehlungen des „Institute of Medicine“ (USA). Zudem ist Korrelation nicht automatisch Kausalität. Vieles aus der Literatur deutet darauf hin, dass ein Vitamin-D-Mangel eher ein Marker für schlechte Gesundheit ist und die Supplementation nichts an der wahren Ursache ändert.
