Abstract
Attachment theory, conceptualized by John Bowlby, postulates the primary need for comfort and closeness related to a nurturing person, contributing to the formation of internal representations/working models of attachment and attachment experiences during early childhood. Aspects of the self concept as well as concepts about the responses of relevant others are integrated within these representations. During the recent years, developmental research has provided a strong empirical basis of the theory and contributed to the fact that the theory has become increasingly important within the clinical context. The therapeutic alliance can – at least under specific conditions – be understood as a specific form of an attachment relationship. Such a model of the therapeutic alliance has initiated a variety of theoretical reflections about the quality of the therapeutic relationship from an attachment perspective. In addition, there is an increasing number of empirical studies focussing on the relevance of attachment constructs for treatment outcome, the therapeutic process and the therapeutic alliance. A summary of these studies reveals that it can be fruitful for psychotherapists to have a closer look at Bowlby’s theory as an aid to understand and avoid ruptures and problems within the therapeutic alliance.
