Abstract

This article addresses future healthcare structures for children and adolescents with diabetes due to the increasing incidence and prevalence of diabetes, multiple innovations in diabetes technology and new ways for communication as well as in view of changes in inpatient and outpatient healthcare systems.

Based on a round-table discussion at a meeting of German-speaking pediatric diabetologists, diabetes care structures were compared among four neighboring European countries (D, A, B, CH). Quality assurance is established in these countries and regional and nationwide networking of people and institutions for documentation and analysis is a prerequisite for future improvement in healthcare. Network structures are paramount for the qualification of diabetes teams and for patient orientation. It is expected that in the future participation of patients and families will lead to increased responsibility of persons with diabetes and their caregivers.

People with diabetes are entitled to continuous, sustained high-quality care in all regions of a country with equal access for all citizens. This has to be a major focus of future healthcare structures.
