Cysts

  • Chapter

Abstract

Cysts are excavations within tissue either lined by epithelium, as in true cysts, or surrounded by compressed connective tissue and/or granulation tissue, as in pseudocysts. The cavity can be filled with a fluid or semi-solid content. Cysts are usually well-circumscribed, mostly round to oval tumors that can be easily recognized by their clinical picture or by palpation. The uncommon developmental cysts that result from the persistence of vestigial remnants may initially seem wellcircumscribed, but often have connections to underlying structures. Further separated must be cystic tumors, such as cystic basal cell carcinoma, which appear clinically cystic and contain liquid or semisolid material, but start as a solid tumor, as well as apocrine and eccrine hidrocystomas. ◘ Table 93.1 summarizes the most common cysts and their linings.
