Besonders vor dem Hintergrund der Entwicklung neuer antidepressiver Medikamente gelten depressive Erkrankungen heute prinzipiell als gut behandelbar (Murlow 2000). Dennoch wird von allen Beteiligten im Gesundheitswesen (v.a. Patienten, Ärzte und Versicherungsträger) die aktuelle medizinische Versorgung von Patienten mit Depression als unbefriedigend eingeschäatzt. Unkoordinierte, fragmentierte und patientenferne Behandlungsstrategien in der ambulanten Versorgung bewirken bspw. frühe Abbrüche der medikamentösen Therapie und erhöhen damit die Gefahr der Chronifizierung (Gothe 1997). In der Behandlung von Depressiven ist der Hausarzt ein wichtiger „Akteur“, weil er die meisten Menschen behandelt (SVR für die Konzertierte Aktion im Gesundheitswesen, 2001) und weil die Patienten ihm groβes Vertrauen entgegen bringen (Grol 2000). Die Hausärzte geben ihrerseits eine hohe Motivation zur aktiven Versorgung von Patienten mit Depression an (Bermejo 2001).
