Abstract

To assess the perceived efficacy of treatment and parental satisfaction with the service provided, parents of a consecutive series of 488 patients treated at an adolescent psychiatric service were asked to evaluate the treatment six months after initial assessment of their child. Of the 407 (83%) respondents, positive changes in their children's behaviour were reported by 58% of inpatients and 53% of outpatients. Similar proportion of parents of inpatients (22%) and outpatients (21%) made critical comment regarding treatment and provided suggestions for service improvements (31% and 26%, respectively). Parental satisfaction was positively associated with improvement in the child's behaviour and with the length of treatment.
