Viele Annahmen rankten sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten um das zu kurze Zungenband. Dabei wird im Allgemeinen das zu kurze Zungenband als „Frenulum breve“ bezeichnet, manchmal auch mit „Ankyloglosson“ – oder auch „Ankyloglossum“ – gleichgesetzt. Mit dem Ankyloglosson ist allerdings im eigentlichen Sinne des Wortes nur die verwachsene Zunge gemeint, also die Maximalausprägung des zu kurzen Zungenbands, bei der das Zungenband bis zur Zungenspitze verwachsen ist [1, 2]. Die Notwendigkeit, eine komplett verwachsene Zunge, also ein Ankyloglosson zu therapieren, leuchtet meist ein, beim zu kurzen Zungenband, dem Frenulum breve, wird die Notwendigkeit einer Therapie nicht allgemein akzeptiert. So wurde über die klinische Bedeutung und die beste Behandlung dieser Anomalie immer wieder kontrovers diskutiert. Da die Mundmotorik ein funktionelles System ist, macht es der Mangel an einfach messbaren Parametern schwer, die Normvariante von der pathologischen interventionsbedürftigen Anomalie zu unterscheiden [3] und die Effektivität einer frühen Intervention hinreichend zu belegen, obwohl viele Mutter-Kind-Paare im Laufe der Zeit eindeutig von einer Frenotomie, der Durchtrennung des zu kurzen Zungenbands, profitiert haben [4, 5]. …
