Balik and colleagues have published an interesting article about the application of esmolol as a selective b1 blocker simultaneous to norepinephrine in septic shock [1]. This “thinking outside the box” is no new consideration in management of critically ill patients. In the late 1960s, Berk published the “b-theory of shock” as an important part in the pathogenesis of shock [2, 3]. …
