An 83-year-old man presented with fever, confusion and abdominal pain. Abdominal palpation revealed left-sided pain. The leukocyte count was 17.2 G/l, and C‑reactive protein was 237 mg/L (normal < 5 mg/L). Escherichia coli was cultivated in urine. Using ultrasound, diverticulitis of the sigmoid colon and gas bubbles were seen within the bladder wall. The patient’s medical history included chronic kidney disease, coronary artery disease, successfully treated prostate cancer, diverticulosis of the sigmoid colon and long-standing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. …
