Exactly 50 years ago, Andreas Rett published his clinical observations on girls with a never before described phenotype—later to be named after him—in this journal, the Wiener Medizinische Wochenschrift. Half a century later, it is our great pleasure to present a special issue on Rett syndrome that combines both retrospective and prospective views of parents, clinicians, and scientists. It is a story of what has been achieved, what needs to be done, and what can be expected. In this issue, we offer a glimpse into the past, the present, and the future, according to how we believe things may continue to develop. Some of those responsible for the many achievements in clinical and scientific fields, as well as in the provision of care, provide a tribute to everyone who has been and continues to be involved, to those who dedicate their life to the study of Rett syndrome. …
