Summary

Purpose

To report the effects of accidental subretinal injection of Membrane Blue-Dual during epiretinal membrane peeling.

Methods

Baseline and follow-up examinations after surgery included slit lamp biomicroscopy, best-corrected distance visual acuity, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography, microperimetry and fundus autofluorescence.

Results

Membrane Blue-Dual was injected subretinally due to technical problems with the syringe. The dye accumulated in the region of the inferior arcade vessels and central visual acuity was not affected. However, fundus autofluorescence showed increased intensity in the relevant region during follow-up, indicating alterations on retinal tissue.

Conclusions

Membrane Blue-Dual is known to be amongst the least toxic retinal dyes available. Our findings indicate that it can still cause alterations on retinal tissue.
